1. Selecting a colorless diamond is about its cut. Only an ideal cut can bring out the best colorful fire of a diamond. For colored diamonds, it’s about their colors.
Three factors for grading color:
– Hue: The eyes’ first impression of the color.
– Tone: The fancy diamond’s brightness or darkness.
– Saturation: The intensity of the color, also called the color shade.
2. The rarest mined fancy diamonds are red diamonds.
3. Fancy diamonds are often cut into different shapes to best present their color. The total production is only 0.1% of that of colorless diamonds, and thus the high prices.
4. Brown and black diamonds are cheaper than colorless diamonds as the yields are higher. Yellow diamonds are relatively more common than pink and blue diamonds, making them less expensive.
5. Colored diamonds may change colors after being polished. Sometimes, their mass must be sacrificed to get a better-graded color.
