The New Era of a diamond

Our diamonds are lab-grown using the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method, and are known as one of the most romantic inventions of modern society.

What is Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)?

How are diamonds grown in the lab? After more than a decade of development, we have optimized the lab-growing procedure and is seen as the leading manufacturer of lab-grown diamonds.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) starts with placing a high-quality Type IIA diamond seed in a vacuum chamber. Carbon- heavy gases are then introduced and heated to create plasma. Pure carbon would attach to the seed as atoms grow into a diamond. Once the growth is complete, the rough diamond will be inspected rigorously before being cut and polished to perfection by master craftspeople.

Are all lab-grown diamonds the same?

A common misconception is that all lab grown diamonds are the same. Not all lab grown diamonds are created equal, just as not every diamond mine or earth mined diamond is created equal. Like mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds can run the full spectrum of the 4Cs.

High-quality diamond production requires unique expertise, scientific prowess, and calibrated and stable infrastructure. Our CVD diamonds are ‘As Grown’, meaning no post-growth treatment or color enhancement has been performed on our stones after they are grown.

CVD Diamond Growth Process

World renowned crystal growth scientist and Chief Process Officer Jonathan Levine-Miles, PhD shares step-by-step how our diamonds are grown sustainably in our controlled, safe production environment. From diamond seed selection, to atom-by-atom growth within the chamber, to final finishing by expert team of scientists and artisans, we’re here to shed light on the specialized process of high-quality diamond growth.

A perfect recipe of art, science, and human ingenuity

Guided one-by-one through their growth process by our leading engineers and scientists, chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamonds are created to specification in our proprietary chambers. Average CVD growth times are heavily dependent on the producer, underlying processes, recipe and target qualities. Generally, lab grown diamond producers will quote between two to four weeks to create a one carat diamond. The entire process from diamond growth to polished goods typically averages 120 days.

A diamond’s colorful fire comes from cutting.

Before diamond finishing can begin, each rough stone is scanned, and a 3D image and variety of potential diamond plans are generated. In partnership with our sustainability certified Cut and Polish partners, our Merchandising Team reviews these plans and makes a final selection to optimize the cut of the finished gemstone. Each piece of diamond rough grown in our Washington, D.C. area laboratory is planned in this way to ensure we meet the needs of our customers. From here, the fire, brilliance and scintillation of each lab grown diamond is brought to life through the expert hands of artisans.

FAQ about lab-grown diamonds

To acquire real diamonds, mining is no longer needed. This way reduces pollution and inhumane exploitation of miners to avoid producing “blood diamonds.” Lab-grown diamonds are a beautiful choice more friendly to Earth and the future.

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds.
The head of GIA says, “Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same physical and chemical composition as mined diamonds.”
The FTC says, “Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds.”

In July of 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published a jewelry commercial guideline and emphasized that lab-grown diamonds share identical chemical, physical, and optical properties with mined diamonds. The FTC revised the definition of a diamond and stated that “a diamond is a kind of mineral made of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system.” Nowadays, the word “natural” doesn’t apply to mined diamonds anymore while “artificial” no longer applies to lab-grown diamonds.

Not all lab-grown diamonds are the same. Many lab-grown diamonds are produced in factories that rely on fossil fuels, meaning their carbon footprints are as large as traditional mines. The lab-grown diamonds JOY COLORi imports are the lead in the industry, with ®carbon neutral, climate neutral, and the ESG+ Certified Brand Butterfly Mark.

Every diamond should be graded under the 4C international standards so the consumers can be assured of their purchase. And every JOY COLORi diamond has been certificated by international diamond grading institutes.
